Roundtable on ’Dash for Gas: Opportunities & Challenges’

A strong case was made by the distinguished speakers at 10th PetroIndia, a conference which we held jointly with the India Energy Forum on 12 December 2012, on the significance of increasing the share of natural gas in India’s energy basket at a time when the price differential between natural gas and oil is at a historic low. Given the strategic significance of this opportunity, Observer Research Foundation organized the round table to gather the views of key stakeholders on measures to remove hurdles and speed up India?s ’Dash for Gas’.

India as a New Nuclear Supplier

The objective of the workshop was address key ingredients related to the nuclear safety and security, such as the safety regulations, legal infrastructure (e.g., atomic law, liability), and personnel training, among others. The workshop aims to reach out to new nuclear suppliers, industry and expert representatives to discuss how to create a safe and sustainable nuclear future as well as potential criteria for an Indian nuclear supply chain.

Overview on India’s Oil and Gas Upstream Sectors and Its Overseas Investment

The objective of the roundtable was to discuss India’s strategy for oil and gas sector development, especially with a view to overseas investment. With increasing dependence on imported oil and gas, what will be India’s strategy to mitigate its energy insecurity? How effective will be India’s overseas upstream investment strategy? What are the implications of India’s domestic policy framework on this strategy? Learning from Korean energy experts who have provided useful insights to the discussion based on Korea’s approach resulting from its near 100% import dependency.
