About the ORF-RLS Joint Project

WATER

The United Nations has declared 2005-2015, as the International Decade for Action on 'Water for Life', owing to its significance and the pressing need for its conservation in the global scenario. At Observer Research Foundation we recognise the importance of water and its direct relationship with life, livelihood and development. It has also been central to political discourses around the world and is increasingly witnessing contest and competition amongst and within nations. Along with our partners the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS), Berlin, we hosted a Summit on 'Natural Resource Management in South Asia' in New Delhi, India, on March 7-8, 2011. The RLS is itself engaged in substantial work in Africa, Asia and Europe and Latin America. Over the years based on its extensive programmes RLS is internationally recognised as a platform for critical thinking and political alternatives and as a research institute for progressive social development.

Our Summit was shaped around the following themes:

  •  UNDERSTANDING THE ASIAN WATER LANDSCAPE
  •  COMPETING DEMANDS FOR WATER
  •  WATER POLICY CHALLENGES
  •  SHARING WATER RESOURCES

The event saw the participation of distinguished speakers from India and abroad and sought contributions from them by way of papers on particular aspects of one of the themes. These papers and the proceedings of the event would thereafter be published and circulated to the wider global community and policy leaders.
