Climate Change and India: Morality does begin at Home!
15 April 2014
Ashish Gupta,

Climate Change is becoming a major cause of concern but the important thing that is lacking in Climate Change deliberations is that it is concentrated on poor developing countries including India.

IPCC AR5: One More Step for Dialectic Reasoning?
15 April 2014
Lydia Powell,

The contents of the three fifth assessment reports (AR 5) that the IPCC released recently are largely similar to the earlier reports. The prophets of the IPCC offer volumes of threatening numbers and seductively coloured charts to tell us that we are all doomed if we do not accept their dialectic reasoning and follow their prescriptions.

Afghan presidential elections: Implications and the road ahead
16 April 2014
Raghav Sharma

The voluminous participation by the Afghans in the elections, in which all major candidates asserted their desire to sign the Bilateral Security Agreement with the US, does not bode well for the Taliban, which describes signing of the BSA as "a huge crime".

Cementing the BRICS
05 April 2014
Geethanjali Nataraj and Abhirup Bhunia

There is a need to fix the BRICS, by altering growth strategies, reducing external dependence, securing domestic demand and investments, providing jobs to the unemployed, and aiming at lowering untenable inequality.

The outliers who won the PM's post
16 April 2014
Manoj Joshi

If Narendra Modi becomes prime minister, he will join a select band of predecessors who can be called "outliers" - a scientific term used to describe phenomena which are outside the normal experience.

Testing time for Modi?
11 April 2014
T.V. Rajeswar

There is hope among the politicians of various political groups in Kashmir as well as the people of Kashmir that Narendra Modi as Prime Minister would take some decisive action in keeping with their expectations. Modi himself has moderated his stand to that there should be a discussion on Article 370.

Questions about the security of Aadhar project's biometric database
14 April 2014
Mahima Kaul

The Aadhar project remains complex - a herculean task. The UK government shelved its identity card project because it was untested and the technology not secure, and because of the risks to the safety and security of citizens.

Why is the Indian counter-insurgency failing repeatedly?
08 April 2014
Rajesh Rajagopalan

The Indian tendency to muddle through is likely to continue when it comes to counter-insurgency. The distance between the Army and its civilian masters is so gaping that advice, however enriched by experience and reflection, is likely to fall on deaf ears.

Multi-brand retail: Risky to usher in oligopolistic global retailers
14 April 2014
Jayshree Sengupta

It makes more sense to enable domestic multi-brand retailers to become strong and see how they develop the village infrastructure and supply chains. It would be risky to usher in oligopolistic global retailers without any strings attached and allowing them to take a big slice of India's huge retail market.

Neglect of under-privileged: Confront politicians
04 April 2014
Jayshree Sengupta

In today's political scene not many contestants have a background of having worked with the underprivileged people or fighting for the rights of women and children. Many think it is a good opportunity to get into the charmed circle of parliamentarians who have attractive remunerations and huge fringe benefits for five years

Crimea: The US grandstanding that failed again
04 April 2014
Vikram Sood

Obama's warning to Putin that there would be costs for the invasion of Crimea was not only empty, but the real cost in all this was to American credibility, once again. One can, therefore, expect both the US and Russia to assert their rights regardless of international law.

Putin gives lessons in world politics
18 March 2014
Manoj Joshi

The US would be foolish to deepen the new Cold War atmosphere by trying to isolate Russia over Ukraine developments. As for China, that option is simply not open to them any more.
