Jihadis say no to truce offer

Muzaffarabad: Daily Jasarat, February 16, 2010. The terrorist groups operating in Kashmir have refused India’s recent offer to surrender and return to Indian administered Kashmir. Instead they vowed to continue their struggle till their demand for plebiscite waw met. They also demanded India to withdraw its troops from the Kashmir Valley. This was declared in a joint press conference held by the Muzaffarabad Muhajir Camps Association and other militant groups.

Government in conflict with the Judiciary

Islamabad: Daily Ausaf, February 17, 2010. The conflict between the government and judiciary has turned into an ugly game of politics. President Asif Ali Zardari recently overruled the recommendation of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and appointed Justice Khwaja Mohammad Sharif to the Supreme Court. Reacting to the development, Nawaz Sharif remarked that Zardari was repeating the policies of former dictator General Pervez Musharraf. Jamat-i-Islami and PML (N) came out in support of independence of judiciary. In fact Nawaz Sharif threatened the government of civil agitation if it did not resolve the issue soon.

Pervez Elahi urges US to strengthen Pakistan’s forces

Lahore: Daily Ausaf, February 18, 2010. Senior Pakistan Muslim League (Q) leader Chaudhry Pervez Elahi asked the United States to strengthen Pakistan’s defence in order to restore the regional balance of power. He was talking with a delegation comprising US Congress Member Barron Hill, Senator Claire McCaskill, and Jeff Merkley at his residence. Elahi discussed US-Pakistan relations, domestic politics and reiterated the need for dialogue with militant groups instead of pursuing military means alone. The former Punjab Chief Minister accused India of causing unrest in Balochistan by using Afghanistan as a base and urged the visiting delegates to check illegal Indian activities in Afghanistan.

Taliban at Mansehra

Islamabad: Daily Khabrain/Ausaf, February 19, 2010. Three police officials including SHO Khalil Khan were killed in a suicide attack on Balakot police Station in Mansehra. According to news reports, four Tahreek-i-Taliban militants opened fire on policemen and escaped after one of them blew himself up.
