Kayani blames past defeats on uninspiring leadership
Islamabad: Daily Ausaf, June 03, 2010. Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani have said that Islam will always remain the cornerstone of the country's identity as it was created in the name of the religion. He has also asked the people to respect the country's leaders. He said that because of the lack of inspiring leadership, enemies have been able to inflict damage on Pakistan. He also said that if Pakistan's natural resources were properly utilized, the country can eradicate poverty.
Constitutional crisis in POK
Muzaffarabad: Daily Ausaf, May 31, 2010. Pakistan administered Kashmir (POK) has been engulfed in a constitutional crisis. The President of the Pak administrated Kashmir has rejected the appointment of Judges Rafiullah Sultani and Younus Tahir of the Supreme Court. These posts have fallen vacant after the retirement of Chief Justice Riyaz Akhtar Chaudhry and Justice Manzoor Hussein Gillani. Ad hoc Judge Sardar Alam Khan has also quit the office.
The President cited clause 3 of Article 42 and 43 of the Interim Constitution of 1974 to reject the appointment. According to this clause, the jurisdiction of the Pakistan's Supreme Court and High Court does not apply to the ?Independent Kashmir'.
The President of the Advisory Council Justice Khwaja Shahad Ahmad now will have to remain as the Chief Justice of both the High Court and the Supreme Court till the judicial crisis is resolved.
This crisis is reported to be created because of a rift between the POK President and the Pakistan President.
Operations in Punjab soon
Lahore: Daily Ausaf, June 01, 2010. Interior Minister Rehman Malik admitted that members of banned terrorist organisations hailing from Punjab receive training from the Pakistan Taliban in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, and return to carry out terrorist acts in the rest of the country. He suggested that military operations be carried out soon in south Punjab. Meanwhile, analyst Mehdi Hassan pointed out that in spite of blacklisting militant groups, they are able to carry out their activities without any restrictions. It is an open secret that many politicians in Punjab have links with banned groups, which makes punitive actions against them more difficult.
Nearly half of Pakistanis living below poverty line
Islamabad: Daily Jasarat, June 04, 2010. A recent report published by the Pakistan Development Research Institute, Switzerland, has revealed that 48 percent of Pakistanis live below the poverty line. Food scarcity has increased in the last seven years, as 80 percent of national resources have been spent on the armed forces and to repay foreign loan liabilities.
Indo-US talks beneficial to regional peace: Foreign Office
Islamabad: Daily Jasarat, June 04, 2010. Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Abdul Basit has said that Indo-US strategic dialogue will help promote peace in the region. Briefing media persons, he said that Pakistan remained confident of its ties with the United States, even while the two differed over the issue of Drone attacks. He blamed India for violating the Sindh-Tas pact (Indus Water Treaty) and increasing mutual mistrust. Thanking all friendly countries for their help in getting Pakistani citizens, arrested during the flotilla attack, released from Israel, he called for an international commission to investigate the raid.
Appointment of High Court judges
Islamabad: Daily Jasarat, June 03, 2010. Chief Justice of Pakistan Supreme Court, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that, with the exception of America and Israel, in no other country does the Parliament appoint judges to the High Court.
Taliban leader says Peace Jirga in Afghanistan was a gimmick
Lahore: Daily Ausaf, June 02, 2010. A high ranking Taliban leader has claimed that the group is not weakened by the death of top al-Qaeda leader Mustafa Abu al-Yazid al-Misri. Al-Misri was killed, along with his wife and three children, in a Drone strike in the FATA. The Taliban have also slammed the recent Peace Jirga assembled by the Afghan government as a political gimmick.
