Shariat in Defence Colony
Islamabad: Daily Jasarat, November 24, 2009. Pakistan Defence Housing Authority (PDHA) demanded Shariat Law to be imposed to counter the ills of increasing westernisation in the colony.
PDHA revealed that rag-pickers from the nearby slums often collect empty wine bottles, and pornographic material, which they resell, further spreading Haram-fai?l (prohibited acts) in an Islamic society. They also urged the government to carry out reforms in the downtrodden slums.
The body alleged that the growth of radio channels like Mast FM, and un-Islamic practices like gifting roses among young couples was an attempt to Christianise the society. They said that if the government could use sophisticated jammers to prevent Mullah Fazlullah from spreading his message in Swat, them the same should be used in Defence society also.
PDHA members further voiced their disapproval of children playing cricket on busy roads and couples walking in the nearby seafront, terming it a negative influence of a ’Jewish Hollywood’ and ’Hindu Bollywood’. Copies of this petition have also been sent to Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani, Maulana Sufi Mohammad, and his son-in-law Mullah Fazlullah.
Mullah Omar rejects peace proposal
Lahore: Daily Nawa-i-Waqt, November 25, 2009. Taliban Leader Mullah Omar has rejected President Hamid Karzai’s peace overtures. In his message on the eve of the festival of Eid, he dismissed peace talks as long as foreign troops are present in Afghanistan. He blamed NATO troops for destroying mosques and killing civilians, and reiterated that the Taliban will outlive foreign occupation in Afghanistan.
US behind Pakistan trouble
Islamabad: Daily Ausaf, November 26, 2009. An unanswered question is the growing presence of the Indian intelligence agency RAW in Afghanistan in the guise of consulates without American consent. The Indian agents are providing weapons and training Baloch rebels from these bases. The Pakistan governments claim that the US is a friend of Pakistan is a myth. No Pakistani citizen can trust either the US or India, but on the other hand, India and the US are natural allies as they both see Muslims as the enemy. The ’Kerry Global Bill’ and other funds are sweet poison for Pakistan, and no Pakistan citizen is interested in receiving US aid as it is aimed at destroying Pakistan.
Taliban slaughter two on Eid
Peshawar: Daily Khabrain, November27, 2009. Taliban militants killed two anti-Taliban leaders in Mohmand Agency last night. District police officials said that the dead bodies of Maulana Shahzad Gull and Rasool Shah were lying in Lakdoo Mohalla, near Kandaru and were badly slaughtered. According to local Taliban sources, Maulana Shahzad Gull was a commander of local Taliban, but he surrendered to the government on the request of a tribal jirga (council), and Rasool Shah was active member of Agency?s Peace committee. Political administration revealed that both were kidnapped last evening. Police said that Qari Shakil, the commander of Tahreek-e-Taliban in Mohmand agency accepted responsibility.
NRO is now in grave
Islamabad: Daily Jasarat, November 28, 2009. One gets the impression through the print and electronic media that the biggest problem facing Islamabad today is the National Reconciliation Bill (NRO). But are people really concerned about the NRO? A team of journalists traveled from Karachi to Islamabad and visited diverse places like Shaheed Benazirabad, Nawabshah, Moro, Larhkana, Kashmoor, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multaan and Jhang to investigate the public view on the issue. While poverty, price rise, terrorism, unemployment and education dominated the conservations, there was little mention of NRO.
The NRO was promulgated in 2007 by the then President Pervez Musharraf to facilitate the return of Benazir Bhutto with whom he had entered into a power sharing deal. In fact, Benazir Bhutto was so eager to legitimize the Ordinance that she even lobbied to make a Truth and Reconciliation Commission on the lines of a similar process in South Africa; under which politicians, Generals, business icons and bureaucrats were to plead guilty for their crimes and take oath to pledge their loyalty to the constitution.
Benazir Bhutto proposed a way to rescue the country from its bleak present and chart a new path towards progress. But some of the Army Generals and politicians who carry vested interests sabotaged the issue, limiting the issue to the politicians.
Nawaz Sharif now claims that he did not benefit from the NRO. However, Army sources maintain that the deal which was brokered with the assistance of the ruling family of Dubai was instrumental in the return of Nawaz Sharif to Pakistan. Benazir widely explained that no Charter of Democracy could be enforced without NRO. Even Nawaz Sharif supported her on the issue, but after her unfortunate assassination the NRO’s philosophy died in people’s consciousness.
