July19, 2012. The Jammu and Kashmir government said it has started initiatives for increasing the indigenous power generation in the state. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said various mega, medium and small power projects have put the state on road to self reliance in electricity. Under a multi-pronged strategy, the state's hydro power potential is being harnessed in right direction along with taking to the new and renewable energy resources available, he said. He said new projects under the state, as joint ventures, independent power producers (IPP) and PPP modes are being realised under the new power policy. The Chief Minister underlined the need for time-bound completion of power projects by the J&K State Power Development Corporation Ltd. (JKSPDC), said the construction schedules should be regularly monitored. The initiatives taken by the coalition government on power generation and its distribution will show substantial gains in near future providing significant relief to the people, he said. The Board meeting discussed matters pertaining to the implementation of various power projects in the state. The budget of the JKSPDC for 2012-13 and other issues relating to engagement of consultants, making the entity a listed company, power generation during 2011-12 and first quarter of 2012-13 were also discussed.
