The organization department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee announced here on 20 December that 1,968 officials have been punished for wrongdoing during the reshuffle of local governments, legislatures and political advisory bodies.

Indian-born billionaire Lakshmi N Mittal's ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker, became the first foreign corporation to take over a Chinese steel company by signing a $1.8 billion deal with China Oriental Group Company Limited, according to reports here on 15 December.

The number of tourists travelling to Tibet has hit a record high, Chinese state media has reported. Just over four million tourists will have visited Tibet in 2007, an official said, an increase of 64% year on year.

China has sought assistance from West Bengal in developing an IT zone in the communist country. Hubei Provincial People's Association (HPPA) President Tang Zhenxiong said they were keen to develop an IT zone in their country and was seeking help from West Bengal.
