Increase in Petroleum Product Prices: No cause for alarm! - 30 June 2009
"Not passing through world oil price increases fully has resulted in direct fiscal costs, indirect fiscal costs and adverse effects on the level of competition and efficiency in the oil sector as firms are forced to carry part of the cost of price subsidies, making it more difficult to attract investment to the sector..."

Petroleum Subsidy Removal: A Way-out - 23 June 2009
"One way-out for Domestic LPG & PDS Kerosene subsidy phase out could be to implement City Gas Distribution by choosing high population density areas which will offer greater economies of scale in cities in those states where CGD work is already going on. After providing Piped Natural Gas in a specific area in the chosen city, the LPG connections of the households living in that particular area could be surrendered..."

The Cost of Competitive Politics & Fractured Mandates in the Energy Sector - 16 June 2009
"Government interventions, though initially undertaken for National purposes, has provided a mechanism for private claims on Government resources and thwarted original purposes of the Government confirming the postulate of organisation theory that the very act of intervention in a system may prepare the ground for subversion..."

Vol. V Issue. 51; 09 June 2009
Our Addiction to Oil - 09 June 2009
"Oil and oil based feedstock use continued even in rail transport, agriculture and fertilizer segments where oil could have been substituted with coal based electricity and coal. The subsidisation of diesel to supposedly promote social objectives resulted in widespread use of inefficient and outdated diesel motors and engines in agriculture and road transportation..."

Vol. V Issue. 50; 02 June 2009
Crude Oil: Today's Excess, Tomorrow's Shortage - 02 June 2009
"Oil is expected to lead the price recovery touching $125-$175 per barrel in the 12 months between July 2009 and July 2010 and then probably decline. The more basic short term reason given for 'catch-up' growth of commodity prices is that commodity price growth has remained far behind paper asset price appreciation at least until 2003..."

Will China Use Energy, Get Rich & Save the Planet? - 26 May 2009
"China's improvements are starting to have an effect on climate models. In its 2007 report, the International Energy Agency cut its forecast of the annual increase in Chinese emissions of global warming gases, to 3 percent from 3.2 percent, in response to technological gains, particularly in the coal sector, even as the agency raised slightly its forecast for Chinese economic growth..."

Vol. V Issue. 48; 19 May 2009
Low Energy Prices: Opportunity to Acquire Energy Assets Abroad? - 19 May 2009
"One option for the UPA Government which has promised to improve 'energy diplomacy' in its election manifesto is to encourage Indian firms to form consortiums to increase their heft. The joint purchase by Toshiba, Tokyo Power and JBIC of a 20 percent stake in Uranium One of Canada in February 2009 is an excellent example..."

Vol. V Issue. 47; 12 May 2009
Has Reform become a Casualty of Coalition Governments? - 12 May 2009
"The decentralization of political power in India has also had an impact on the energy sector in India. The sector is now fully open to private and foreign capital. Independent, albeit imperfect regulatory bodies have been established in the power and downstream petroleum sectors. The broad thrust of policies in place is to encourage free and fair competition in each element of the energy value chain..."

Vol. V Issue. 46; 05 May 2009
Insatiable Energy Appetite of China & India: Myth or Reality? - 05 May 2009
"Data on major industrial commodity show that current prices adjusted for inflation are 75 percent below their levels in 19th Century. The real price of oil today is at the same level as it was in 1870. Consistent discovery of new fields and greater energy efficiency in developed and developing countries is behind this long term decline and this long term trend is likely to continue..."

Price Control on Natural Gas: Formula for Shortage - 28 April 2009
"Controlling prices and access on the other hand must be done again and again and thus more visible and more accessible to political interests. In such a regime, business entities will be placed in an uncomfortable position of fighting for a position of preference with the Government rather than competing with each other to bring additional supplies at the lowest possible prices..."
